The founding is actually a very interesting story- Rav Yehuda actually was the full time Principal and Headmaster of the Yeshiva KolYehuda in Israel. This organization was the direct ancestory of today’s modern day Kabbalah movement.
The first iteration of the Kabbalah Centre in the United States was founded by Karen Beg and Phillip Berg. It took quite some time to spread across the United States but in 1984 the most prominent Spiritual Center was opened up in Los Angeles. Since then over 60 different branches have been created worldwide to follow the teaching. And some of those branches have even begun to supercede the original New York and Los Angeles locations.
