Dr. Eric Forsthoefel weighs in on why hospitals need to reduce non-urgent visits to emergency rooms

Eric Forsthoefel is a Florida based doctor specializing in emergency medicine. He is a well-accomplished doctor who has medical licenses in the states of Florida and Los Angeles. Dr. Eric Forsthoefel first attended his medical studies at University of Louisville from 2009 to 2012.

After graduating from University of Louisville, Dr. Erick joined Louisiana state university where he completed his residency in emergency medicine. After completing his residency, Dr. Eric Forsthoefel received certifications and the required licenses from various boards in order to serve patients in the ER. Dr. Forsthoefel has also received certifications by the American board of emergency medicine to help patients in emergency medicine.

After university and receiving the numerous certifications to operate as an emergency doctor, Dr. Forsthoefel proceeded to serve the people in an emergency room where he has accrued more than six years of experience. His training and experience have made him an accomplished doctor in assessing, responding, and treating patients with emergency conditions.

Dr. Eric’s time at the emergency rooms has opened his eyes to the whole world of ER. In this article, he addresses one of the most emerging trends that concern him. According to research, one of the significant problems in healthcare is the excessive use of emergency rooms for non-acute conditions.

According to a survey conducted by NPR, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Harvard T.H Chan School of public health, more than a third of Americans visit the ER even though their condition does not qualify as an emergency.

Previous research has reiterated this trend too. According to additional study, this practice has been ongoing since the 90’s.

Why is this a problem?

According to doctor Eric Forsthoefel, the lack of primary health care is one the leading reasons why people visit the emergency rooms in hospitals even though their conditions are diagnosed as non-urgent.

Regardless of the condition of the patient, each patient that visits the emergency room is attended to as an emergency case. Nurses, physicians, technicians, support staff, and other resources such as beds and medical equipment are mobilized to attend to the patient.

The high number of people visiting the ER has led to the stretching of hospital resources further, thus making it hard for the department to attend to urgent cases. Dr. Eric says that this presents a challenge to the department and minimizes the department’s efficiency.

Why do people visit the ER for non-urgent conditions and what can be done?

According to the doctor, most people visit to ER due to three reasons:

  1. Unavailability of a primary care provider in the evening and weekends
  1. Long appointment schedules – usually at least 24 hours.
  1. To avoid deductibles and copay

If these three issues are addressed, hospitals could reduce the number of people visiting the ER, a reduction that would enhance effectiveness and efficiency in their emergency departments.

Eric Lefkofsky gets $80M in new funding for Tempus, fights cancer with technology

Tempus, the cancer-fighting tech firm led by Groupon co-founder Eric Lefkofsky, recently announced that it has received $80 million in new investments to continue its mission to revolutionize cancer treatment by using technology to collect and utilize genomic data from patients and make it accessible to doctors. This latest deal tops Tempus’ overall valuation at around 1.1 billion dollars, giving the company “Unicorn” status, a term coined to describe startup companies valued over $1 billion.

Lefkofsky’s Chicago-based company has built “an operating system to battle cancer.” Tempus works with doctors and hospitals to conduct molecular sequencing and analysis, and it combines that information with clinical data from cancer patients. Even doctor’s handwritten notes can be converted to searchable digital files to optimize treatment for patients. The goal is to create a library of data about the patient as outcomes of previously treated patients to help guide future treatment options. It may help predict outcomes of certain treatments, to ultimately improve patient’s survival rates and quality of life.

Tempus has announced a number of partnerships with renowned cancer research and treament centers such as Mayo Clinic, Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, NYU School of Medicine, and Cleveland Clinic, to name a few. Lefkofsky says the concept of using big data to help patients has been well received and is quickly gaining traction.

Lefofksy, whose life has been personally touched by cancer, plans to use the new funds to expand the fast-growing company. At this time, Tempus has around 400 employees, and that number is increasing rapidly. The company expects to continue adding about 30 employees a month to meet growing demand.

How Waiakea Water Stands Out Among The Competition

Bottled water is a hot commodity right now, spend a few minutes in any grocery store and you’ll find that there are many brands and variations. Each one looks pretty much the same at the end of the day, but inside there is generally something special which the manufacturer includes in order to set them apart from the competition. Some include vitamins or some use a special filtration process, but what is it that sets Waiakea Water apart from the competition?

Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water launched in 2012 when the company’s founder, Ryan Emmons, discovered that the Hawaiian water he enjoyed during summer visits with his family really was something special. Emmons described the water as healthy, pure and sustainable, and one of the only sources like it in the world was found in Hawaii.

Waiakea Water comes from one source that is clean and pristine located on the Big Island of Hawaii just outside of Hilo. It is naturally filtered through the Maua Loa volcano where it runs for thousands of feet making it naturally clean and pure. It also gives it quite a unique mineral composition, it is very rich in electrolytes including potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium and it also has a nearly perfect amount of silica.

Waiakea Water not only comes from a natural and unique source, but also comes in special, sustainable packaging. The water is bottled at a plant that uses roughly 33 percent renewable energy, not only that, but the source itself is renewable boasting an impressive aquifer that has a 1.4 billion gallon recharge rate.

Waiakea water coming from the tropical destination of Hawaii might be enough to temp some consumers, sending their minds to the beautiful vacation destination. Not only that, but consumers tend to link the thought of Hawaii to a more natural and good product, it is a vibe that the thought of Hawaii gives off. The water also uses traditional Hawaiian language for their name, Waiakea comes from two words Wai akea, which translates to broad waters.

It is the filtering process of the water that really makes the company stand out from their competitors. This is not just regular natural water, it is volcanic water. Prior to bottling, the water flows through about 14,000 feet of volcanic rock inside the Mauna Loa volcano. This natural filtration process not only sounds unique and interesting, but many consumers find it just plain cool.

Finally, Waiakea sets themselves apart with their love of the environment. Not only is the water naturally filtered and the processing plant uses renewable energy to run itself, the company is moving one step further and working towards introducing a fully degradable plastic bottle for their water. Not only will these bottles biodegrade, most plastic bottles take over 1,000 years to degrade while Waiakea’s new bottles will only take about 15 years, they are also created using 100 percent recycle materials. They don’t stop there though, Waiakea Water has been certified Carbon Neutral due to their use of low emission vehicles to deliver water and they also choose to donate about 3 percent of their income to local community programs and organizations. The company has one more ace up their sleeve if you aren’t convinced yet. For every liter of their water that is purchased, Waiakea donates a week’s supply of clean water to the people who are in need of it in Malawi.
