The Great Giver Malini Saba

One of the world’s greatest philanthropists and investing minds of South Asian heritage is Malini Saba. Saba is the chairman of Saban, a global enterprise that invests around the world in technology companies. Some of its notable interests are in the US oil industry, the gas industry in China, and the housing markets in India, and Australia. Malini Saba has chosen to spend much of her wealth generated through business on charity. Years ago she created a charitable organization called “Stree: Global Investments in Women” which has the mission of impacting the way women with low financial resources view themselves and to improve their access to life’s necessities.

Stree has been very successful in helping women since 2001 and it was recognized both by Queen Noor of Jordan and US President Bill Clinton. They congratulated Malini Saba on empowering women legally, improving women’s access to healthcare, and for helping to connect people through grassroots movements on multiple continents. Malini Saba‘s giving does not stop there however, she has given away far more money to other organizations.

Malina Saba is passionate about the health of South Asian people and so back in 2005 she donated $1 million to the Heart Research Center for South Asians in California. Also, when Sri Lanka was hit by a tsunami back in 2004 she donated $10 million to victims of that tragic incident.

Since the beginning of her career, Malini Saba has been a financially savvy person. She was a venture capitalist in the 1990s. At that time she made investments in Paypal, Sycamore Networks, and Netscreen technologies. The latter two companies are now worth billions of dollars and Saba profited heavily by wisely getting in early. When she was younger she wanted to join a venture capitalist group but she was met with repeated rejection. She did not give up on her goals and she founded her own investment company, Saban. Malini Saba’s success is due in part to her forward-looking nature. She does not look at the world as it is today but rather she thinks about how the world will be 3 to 5 years in the future based upon what is happening now. This led her to invest in the Indian real estate market in the early 2000s which paid off immensely over the years. Malini Saba says that the number one influence has been Steve Jobs and she respects him because he was a fighter and strives to be as great as he was.

Susan McGalla Success Formula for Working Women

Advocacy for change in the working conditions and standards for women in the workplace has become a national conversation. Data from the U.S Department of Labor indicate that in the mid-twentieth century, at least one in five women took part in the labor force. Today women take up 46.9% of the labor force but only 14.6% are in the executive ranks. Susan McGalla, a successful Pittsburg management, and branding consultant note that, while there is notable growth and demand for female labor in the U.S, many women still faces hurdles advancing in the workplace.

Higher Education for Greater Opportunities
In the U.S, women make up almost half of the professional workers and such efforts can be used for growth. Susan McGalla notes that for one to succeed in the male-dominated work environment, more women need to be educated in the skill dependent economy. She advises that as young women, they should not be intimidated by the high cost of higher education rather rely on smart planning that includes looking for scholarships. The enrollment rates in colleges continue to exceed men, notes Susan.

Unrelenting Confidence
Although the achievement of higher education for women continues to increase, they have less confidence once they hit the work environment. They feel inadequate in pursuing their careers within a given firm. Susan McGalla borrows a leaf from one study conducted by the Bain and Company which shows that the aspirations of women drop by sixty percent due to bad management. Therefore, it is necessary to launch support and build a strong network of pace setters. She notes that the climbing desire to excel is what produces high-quality work to attain top management roles.

Ignoring the Glass Ceiling
In her words, Susan McGalla owes her personal success to ignoring the glass ceiling and only focusing on her work ethic.  While the social arrangements of gender-categorized roles continue to dominate the labor industry, Susan encourages all women to endure. Lifelong Outdoorsman Optimistic About the Future of California Ski Resorts

The ongoing drought in California provokes legitimate worry about environmental and business impacts, but Andy Wirth, the CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, predicts a solid future for California’s ski industry.

In a July 30 2015 interview with Madeleine Brand on KCRW’s midday show Press Play, Wirth confidently proclaimed he expected his company to continue to be successful for “infinite” years to come.

This positive outlook seems counterintuitive in light of a 20% decline in business from previous years due to the record dry 2014-2015 winter. Wirth, however, was quick to point out that 4,000 of the resort’s 6,000 acres were up and running that winter and the company still managed to make a comfortable profit. Ski resorts in general, and California ski resorts in particular, have had to build solid capital structures and to incorporate the weather’s increasing volatility into their business models in order to maintain profitability.

Under Andy Wirth’s leadership, Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, which operates Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley Resorts, has met the challenge of weather volatility by both managing the snow in a very proactive manner and by seeking to understand the science of climate change.

Innovations in technology have allowed the larger resorts to make artificial snow in vast quantities.

There is also a greater emphasis on strategically managing the snow pack with Snowcats and other heavy equipment. Well versed on the subject of climate change, Wirth sites Stanford University’s research linking California’s drought with climate change and the “ridiculously resilient ridge” of high pressure that prevents low pressure storm systems from entering the mountains.

Wirth’s understanding of science is no surprise as he has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Colorado. His career in the resort industry also seems unsurprising as he has fostered a relationship with nature and the outdoors his entire life.

Wirth spent time as a back country ranger for Rocky Mountain National Park and was one of an elite team of Hotshot Wildland Firefighters in New Mexico.

He has been in the mountain resort and hotel industry for 25 years, but still finds time for community service. Wirth has organized Iron Man teams to raise money for the Navy Seal Foundation and is a volunteer firefighter.

Wirth’s love of nature also leads him to view his role as CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings as one of stewardship. His resource management approach seeks to not just profit from the land, but to reduce or eliminate the business practices that are contributing to climate change.

The legacy Andy Wirth would like to leave is a ski industry that relies on renewable energy and one that has a much smaller carbon footprint.
